This presentation reviews how pharmaceutical drugs have become the number one drug of abuse among adolescents and young adults and represent the largest public health epidemic in the last century. Why they are so attractive, rewarding and deadly will be discussed from neurobiological and genetic bases. Treatment approaches from a public health prevention, identification and treatment perspective are discussed and categorized by the American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM) dimensions of care.

Use of narcan, buprenorphine, naltrexone and other anti-relapse drugs will be explained based upon the treatment strategies of overdose prevention, withdrawal management, pain relief and anti-craving indications.

Prescription drug abuse and misuse is perhaps the most vexing epidemic of our times. This presentation will address this insidious yet pervasive epidemic as well as the epidemiology of prescription drug abuse/misuse in Rhode Island. Diversion, morbidity and mortality from overutilization of prescription drugs, particularly controlled substances, will be discussed.

Expectations of the Rhode Island Board of Medical Licensure and Discipline will be discussed as well as practical resources to help you prescribe safely and responsibly.
