This program will address the growing problem of benzodiazepine prescribing alone and in combination with other opioids. The program is targeted to prescribers of all controlled substances and designed to be a practical understanding of this topic as well as reminding prescribers of the pharmacological and epidemiological principles that underlay this issue.
Educational Objective:
At the conclusion of these activities, participants should be able to:
• Describe the epidemiology of opioid and benzodiazepine overprescribing in the United States ands its consequences • Define effective uses for benzodiazepines • Explain the current lack of evidence for effectiveness of benzodiazepines used concurrently with opioid analgesics • Describe the population of patients with pain who are more likely to receive concurrent benzodiazepine therapy • Describe alternative approaches to treatment of pain aside from the combined use of opioids and benzodiazepines • Describe the assessment of pain & approaches to safe opioid use
