Clinical Issues in the Syndemic of HIV Infection, Mental Illness and Substance Use
Jan 01, 1970 12:00 AM - 12:00 AM
Because a syndemic orientation demands a commitment to the philosophy of health as a fragile, dynamic state that requires continual effort, impacted by social and systemic pressures, so does that of the health of individuals living with HIV infection. This presentation includes an introduction to a syndemic orientation as it is associated with HIV infection, an ethnographic history of the orientation, and current research and media attention on patients living with syndemic conditions. The research portion includes an exploration of clinical cases that highlight the need for viewing chronic illnesses such as HIV, mental illness, and substance use from a syndemic orientation rather than in isolation. The registration fee is $49; $39 for Lifespan employees.
