As a syndemic orientation demands a commitment to appreciating health as a fragile, dynamic state that requires continual effort impacted by social and systemic pressures, so does that of the health of individuals living with HIV infection. This presentation will provide an introduction to a syndemic orientation as it is associated with HIV infection. The ethnographic history of the orientation will be provided along with current research and media attention dedicated towards patients living with syndemic conditions. The research presentation will be accompanied by an exploration of clinical cases which highlight the need for viewing chronic illnesses, such as HIV, mental illness, and substance use from a syndemic orientation rather than by viewing conditions in isolation.
