Difficult Ethical Challenges

This training will provide participants with an overview and in-depth examination of compelling ethical challenges in the addictions field. Building on introductory ethics concepts, Dr. Reamer will explore difficult ethics cases and practical strategies designed to protect clients and practitioners. The workshop will include a series of challenging ethics cases involving conflicting professional duties and discuss practical steps that professionals can take to manage ethical issues skillfully. Key topics will include boundary issues, dual relationships, conflicts of interest, confidentiality, privileged communication, informed consent, clients’ rights, termination of services, professionals’ and clients’ use of digital and social media technology, documentation challenges, and impaired professionals. The training will include discussion of relevant ethical standards; statutes, regulations, and case law; social and cultural diversity and competence; supervision; and consultation. The presenter will make extensive use of case material.
