Pregnancy and Addiction

This course will review the impact of alcohol, cocaine, opiates and benzodiazepines on the pregnant patient. There will be a review of risks to both mother and developing fetus, the impact of continued drug use throughout pregnancy and the effects on the newborn. Current treatment options will be reviewed as well as the benefits of clinical interventions including harm reduction models with pregnant patients. In addiction participants will begin to explore ways in which they can begin to develop collaborative relationships with community supports and other agencies (DCF, Early Intervention, Pediatricians etc) in an effort to stabilize the family.
