SUMMARY:Practical Solutions to Prescribing Medication Assisted Treatment
DESCRIPTION:Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) is the use of FDA-approved medications\, in combination with counseling and behavioral therapies\, to provide a “whole-patient” approach to the treatment of substance use disorders. Buprenorphine\, methadone and naltrexone are considered evidence-based treatment approaches. According to a study published in the Annals of Family Medicine\, more than half of the physicians who obtain a DATA waiver to prescribe MAT do not actually prescribe due a variety of barriers. Implementing any new treatment or skill into practice can be daunting. This educational activity will provide practical tips and strategies that will help prescribers overcome common barriers allowing them to add this treatment modality to their clinical armamentarium.
