Transgender Minority Stress and its Impact on Mental Health and Substance Use – Training

Participants will learn how gender dysphoria, social stigma, and discrimination make transgender and gender non-conforming people uniquely vulnerable to experiencing substance use disorder.

Objectives

After this training, participants will be able to:

1. Describe the history of pathologization and medicalization of trans and gender non conforming people in the DSM.

2. Identify common mental health disparities affecting transgender people.

3. Identify ways that transgender and gender non conforming people experience stigma and discrimination and minority stress that contributes to poor mental health and substance use outcomes.

4. Identify ways that service providers can support clients accessing services in the community.
