Counseling in groups has long been established as the most effective milieu for the treatment of people with substance abuse disorders and/or mental health disorders. Yet, many counselors have had to provide group intervention without proper preparation and training. The results can be discouraging to say the least. Knowing how to intervene effectively when faced with critical moments in a group session will enhance the therapeutic experience for the group members and foster confidence in the group leader. This six-hour course will explore group developmental stages and interaction dynamics. Attention will be given to techniques and approaches that will enhance the group experience for both the client population and the clinician.
