Trainer: Thomas Butero, LICSW

Thomas Butero is a Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker with over 40 years of experience in behavioral health, youth services, and crisis intervention. He has held leadership roles across New England, including Executive Director and Site Director positions within child and family service organizations. Tom currently serves as a consultant with the University of Massachusetts Medical School, where he contributes to training initiatives for mental health providers. He is also an experienced educator and author of “I Don’t Want to Die: A New Look at Suicide Assessment, Intervention and Prevention” (2025), bringing valuable expertise to his work in youth suicide intervention.

Training Description & Objectives:

This program will explore the basics of crisis theory, including the stages and characteristics of an emotional crisis. The presentation will include intervention strategies and techniques as well as a discussion of the efficacy of short-term crisis treatment.

At the end of this webinar participants should be able to:

  1. Understand the five stages of a crisis and the emotional impact of stress on individuals
  2. Recognize the signs and symptoms of emotional crises at their various stages.
  3. Develop basic intervention skills and techniques for managing a crisis.
