RIPRC’s LGBTQAAI+ Training: Exploring Intersecting Identities with Cultural Humility

June 28, 2023 @ 11:00 am - 1:00 pm

Join the RIPRC for a virtual workshop to explore intersecting identities with cultural humility! One of the most important parts of identity is having language to describe ourselves. In this two-hour workshop, participants will explore language that reflects the complex reality of gender and sexual identities and gain historical context on our modern expectations of gender and sexuality. As our world works to accept frameworks that better reflect the complexity and nuanced realities of gender and sexual identities, it is important to continue pushing the edge of how our language and communities reflect the lived realities of individuals. Let’s go beyond the LGBT, the QUILTBAG, the LGBTQAAI acronyms and invite people to explore their own identities in an expansive manner. This workshop will facilitate what creative and intentional language we can use, as well as provide meaningful ways to use language that aids in creating an affirming and inclusive space for people across the gender and sexuality spectrum. This workshop is not meant to ensure competence, but rather, humility, which includes the understanding that self-reflection is integral to our ongoing growth and learning. With this understanding, participants will have the tools to create equity through accountability, empathy, and empowerment.

Objectives – By the end of this workshop, participants will:

  1. Be knowledgeable on gender and sexuality terms that are inclusive and affirming.
  2. Be prepared to create spaces that are affirming and inclusive of people across the gender and sexuality spectrum.
