Treating the Whole Person: An Integrated Approach to Diagnosing Co-Occurring Disorders

Co-occurring disorders (COD)- the simultaneous presence of a substance use disorder (SUD) and one or more mental health disorders- are common and often complex to treat. This beginner-friendly webinar offers a foundational look at recognizing, diagnosing, and treating co-occurring disorders through an integrated approach. Participants will learn to understand the interaction between mental health and substance use disorders, differentiate overlapping symptoms, and identify effective evidence-based integrated dual disorder treatment (IDDT) strategies for treating this population.

Objectives:

At the end of this webinar participants should be able to:

  1. Explore key principles in assessment and diagnosis, including how to screen for both mental health and substance use symptoms, and how to distinguish primary disorders from substance-induced conditions.
  2. To provide participants with a foundational understanding of Integrated Dual Disorder Treatment as an evidence-based model for treating co-occurring mental health and substance use disorders, including its core principles, stages of treatment, and practical strategies for implementation in clinical practice.
