Trainer Biography
Patricia Cioe, Ph.D., APRN, FNP-BC
Trish is the Associate Professor of Behavioral and Social Sciences at Brown University and is affiliated with Brown University’s Center for Alcohol and Addictions Studies. She received a PhD in nursing from the University of Massachusetts Medical School Worcester in 2012. She completed a post-doctoral fellowship at the Center for Alcohol and Addictions Studies at Brown University where she cross trained in HIV, tobacco dependence and addictive behaviors. She received training in qualitative research methods and behavioral intervention development. Dr. Cioe’s research interests focus broadly on cardiovascular risk reduction in people with HIV with a specific focus on smoking cessation and smoking harm reduction. Specifically, her research seeks to improve clinical outcomes through development of innovative interventions and promotion of health behavioral changes at the patient level. Thank You Trish!
Training Description
This presentation provides a comprehensive overview of vaping for health care and allied health professionals. It explores the structure and function of vaping devices, the composition of e-liquids, and current patterns of use across different populations. The session examines the short- and long-term health effects associated with vaping, including lung injury. It also discusses the role of vaping in tobacco harm reduction and smoking cessation, and offers practical approaches for patient screening, education, and counseling.
Learning Objectives
At the end of this virtual training, participants will be able to:
- Describe the components and mechanisms of vaping devices.
- Summarize vaping epidemiology and trends.
- Identify key health risks and EVALI presentation.
- Evaluate vaping in harm reduction context.
- Apply clinical and counseling strategies.
