Webinar – Cannabis Use in Pregnancy and Lactation: Understanding the Science and Assisting Practitioners with Prevention Strategies
August 24, 2020 @ 1:00 pm
Presenters: Laura M. Borgelt, Pharm. D., FCCP, BCPS and Tricia Wright MD, MS, FACOG, DFASAM
An estimated 7% of women are using cannabis during pregnancy. Although women may use it for medical reasons such as nausea or vomiting in pregnancy, the prevalence of non-medical use is higher. Additionally, employees in cannabis dispensaries are frequently recommending cannabis to these women. Many women and healthcare professionals are unaware of the potential risks to the fetus and mother. In this session, we will discuss the effects of cannabis on the endocannabinoid system and fetal development, review studies that have evaluated use of cannabis in pregnancy, and describe prevention strategies regarding cannabis use in pregnancy and lactation.
Learning Objectives
- Discuss the use of cannabis on the endocannabinoid system and fetal development.
- Evaluate studies that have evaluated use of cannabis in pregnancy and lactation.
- Describe the risk factors associated with marijuana use during pregnancy and breastfeeding.
- Explain prevention strategies for practitioners and coalitions to minimize or eliminate harm of cannabis use during pregnancy and lactation.
