Substance Use and Mental Health in Teens and Young Adults

Child Mind Institute, 2020

What if your teen or young adult is not only struggling with a substance use disorder, but also a mental health disorder, like depression or anxiety, at the same time?

Formerly referred to as “dual diagnosis,” someone struggling with both a substance use disorder and a mental health disorder has a co-occurring disorder. In fact, 65 percent or more of youth with substance use disorders also have a mental health disorder.

The combination of substance use and mental health disorders can create a challenging situation, so Partnership for Drug-Free Kids partnered with Child Mind Institute to create a PDF guide. It gives parents and caregivers useful information, insights and resources that can help make this journey easier and help you get quality care for your child.
